Lab Meetings

Weekly lab meetings are an integral part of our culture. They
serve as a sounding board for new ideas and concepts, a chance to present
and critique experimental design, group input on the realities of operational
planning, help in interpreting preliminary results, assisted decision making,
requests for assistance in upcoming large experiments, discussions of lab
operations, planning of social events, and practice sessions for scientific
presentations. We convene in an informal lunch-time atmosphere that
facilitates collegial discussion. Each student takes a turn every semester. Typically
a new student will use their first meeting to present a research proposal
and solicit feedback. Their next meeting is usually devoted to honing
the fine points of their proposal, often matters of experimental design and
pragmatic choices. Subsequent meetings are for presentations of results,
interpretation of data, and practice for upcoming presentations at scientific
meetings. Sometimes students volunteer to lead sessions on areas
in which they have gained particular expertise such as an analytical chemistry
procedure, a new statistical analysis, or how to sharpen a chain saw. And
whenever students have gone abroad for either research or pleasure, they
often present a travelogue. Over time, the schedules of these lab meetings
also provide a nice road map of our journeys as a group.
