Assistant Professor and Extension Entomologist
Degree and area of specialization:
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Entomology or related field and relevant training or experience.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Post Ph.D. research and teaching experience is desirable but not essential. Preference will be given to candidates that present evidence of excellent teaching skills, a record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, success attracting extramural funding. and have displayed coordination with regard to research and outreach Extension programs.
Principal duties:
The Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin -Madison is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Extension Fruit Crops Entomology and Pollination Biology. A successful candidate will be expected to become a local, state and national leader in the development and delivery of Extension programs, outreach, and adult education in the area of fruit crop integrated pest management (IPM). Potential areas of outreach can include, but are not limited to, management of exotic and emerging invasive arthropod pests, integration of reduced risk pesticide chemistries, induced crop resistance, ecologically based pest management, or biological control. This specialization will lend support to Extension entomology colleagues assigned to other commodities. This person will be part of the existing University of Wisconsin commercial fruit Extension team which includes a Horticulturist, Plant Pathologist, and Weed Scientist.
We are especially interested in candidates whose research interests can provide a scientific understanding of the main factors influencing crop pollination services in fruit crops in Wisconsin. We encourage applicants with backgrounds working on fundamental biology of wild as well as managed pollinators. The ideal candidate will develop IPM programs that balance pollinator management with innovative crop protection strategies with coordination between research and extension programs.
Teaching responsibilities will include team-teaching Principles of Economic Entomology and a pollinator biology/conservation course.
