Is this a great golden digger wasp? or something else? There are two in the same area as sweat bees...sharing space? ... See moreSee less

UW-Madison Department of EntomologyYes--looks like the golden digger wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus). Many tunneling insects prefer sandier soils, (easier to tunnel into). This is likely why this wasp and the ground-nesting sweat bees are sharing the same general area.

Department of Entomology Chair's Opportunity Fund
The Department of Entomology Chair's Opportunity Fund was established to support various department activities and programs that:

  • Reinforce a sense of belonging and community to a cohesive department culture among faculty, staff, students and alumni
  • Facilitate conference attendance where the presentation is important to department climate
  • Provide for faculty, academic and classified staff, and student opportunities and recognition
  • Provide for receptions and entertainment costs associated with meals and refreshments related to retirements, welcome ceremonies, and other occasions that the Chair considers to be a team or morale building opportunity or that allow the department to function as a productive community

Programs and events may be held on or off campus. The department chair has spending authority for this fund.

Department of Entomology Seminar Series Fund
This fund provides support for the Department of Entomology seminar series.  The weekly seminar program brings in local, regional and national speakers to address current issues in entomology. The seminars are attended by faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates from Entomology and numerous other UW departments, and are considered a vital component of the research, education and outreach mission of the Department. The activities supported by this fund shall be determined by the Department Chairman, in consultation with the Seminar Committee.

Department of Entomology Undergraduate Research Opportunity Fund
Income from the fund will support research opportunities for outstanding undergraduate students to work in collaboration with faculty in the Department of Entomology. The Department Chair or Academic Affairs Committee Chair will be the spending authority for this fund.
