BED BUG BITES

Not all people react to bed bug bites but if you do you can expect well defined marks. Bed bugs do not live on people and do not fly so you must be exposed to through travel, buying used furniture, or moving into a contaminated home or apartment. For more info see http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/diaglab/labnotes/bedbug.pdf.

SAWFLIES

There are number of caterpillar like worms called sawflies that feed on a variety of conifers and woody trees and shrubs. The damage can be misidentified. This spruce sample was chewed on a week or two before the owner noticed a problem. The tree will recover and it would be good to check the tree next year about two weeks earlier to control the problem.

GYPSY MOTH UPDATE

We did see diseases kill some larvae but the cool, wet, weather of May did not cause as much of a problem for the caterpillars as we hoped for. This is a bur oak in Madison that is leafing out again after the feeding. There are numerous tan egg masses on the undersides of major branches and you can see pupa cases and egg masses on the side of the building. This is a prime candidate for egg mass treatments For more information see http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/diaglab/06hilite/07_07.html.
