BLISTER BEETLES

We have had a number of reports of metallic green beetles feeding heavily on Lupine, Baptesia, and various other legume plants. They are a type of blister beetle, Lytta sayi. The larvae are parasites of various ground bees. We seem to see these outbreaks every few years.

IT IS FIREFLY TIME

Fireflies have been active for the past two weeks in southern Wisconsin . We have over a dozen different species in the state. The larvae feed on slugs, snails and other insects. All larvae can produce light but not all of the adults do. Best place to find them is in damp, marshy areas. A general internet site on fireflies can be found at http://iris.biosci.ohio-state.edu/projects/FFiles/

GRAPE FLEA BEETLE

Both the adults and larvae of the grape flea beetle feed on the leaves of grape. Larvae are the main problem and are active now. They can be controlled with most sprays of Sevin or methoxychlor.
