Insect Highlights
Insect Highlights for the Week of April 13,2004
![]() Tent Caterpillar Egg Mass |
Eastern Tent Caterpillars Now is the time to remove the egg masses of the Eastern
Tent Caterpillars. They will begin to hatch as the tree buds open. Look
for small swellings on twigs. They can be easily pruned or scrapped off.
Look for egg masses on apple, cherry, plum, crabapple, or other flowering
fruit trees. For more information, look under Extension bulletin (A 2933)
and can be found at http://cecommerce.uwex.edu/showcat.asp?id=15. |
![]() Carpenter Ants |
Carpenter Ants Spring always brings ants along with flowers. If you have been seeing medium to large black ants for the last 2-3 weeks it strongly suggests that you have a carpenter ant colony in the home. Activity seems to peak in April and early May and as food becomes available outdoors the ants number may drop. The best control is to find the nest, but some of the new ant baits made specifically for carpenter ants are also very effective. For more information go to http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/entobltn.html and click on the controlling carpenter ant bulletin. |
![]() Anthrnus Carpet Beetle |
Insect ID Adult carpet beetles are most active in the spring. To help you identify the critters you find in your home we have expanded the insect ID section. Go to http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/insectid/index.html. We will begin to work on the outdoor insect pest section
this summer. |
